Themes
Once you have completed Phase I of Blue Chip, you will select a theme to be in for the remainder of your time in Blue Chip. Although everyone in Blue Chip will be learning similar leadership concepts, each theme will provide a very unique context to apply these concepts. Themes are:
ARTS THEME
Theme Class offered Mondays 2-3:50pm
Art is a universal form of communication, whether through performing arts, graphic arts, creative arts, or media arts. It exists in various ways and in all cultures. The arts not only affect the aesthetics of all that surrounds us, it also communicates the past, present, and future of our global society. A leader who incorporates the insight of the arts in their leadership enables themselves and others to engage in an inclusive and historical perspective of the world around them. You will get the opportunity to build your understanding of leadership development through art education concepts such as aesthetics, criticism, art media, and history.
ECO THEME
Theme Class offered Tuesdays 4-5:50pm
Ecology, like leadership, is a relational process. Ecology is interdependency on an environmental level – it is the interaction between humans and the environment. Actions that humans take have large consequences for the environment. It follows then that humans also have the biggest responsibility to the environment. You will get to develop an understanding of socially responsible leadership in maintaining the synchronicity of humanity and nature. You will be able to develop skills such as decision-making, empowerment, communication, and teamwork through participation in environmental learning and outdoor initiatives.
GLOBAL THEME
Theme Class offered Wednesdays 3-4:50pm
Global means pertaining to or affecting the entire world. To be a global leader, one must understand and cultivate the various differences that comprise the world and work together to effectively, inclusively, and peacefully make the world a better place for all. Global issues can be quite comprehensive and include a variety of political, economic, social justice, international and environmental issues. You will be challenged to look at global leadership development and understand what it means to be a global leader of social change.
SERVICE THEME
Theme Class offered Tuesdays 3-4:50pm
The non-profit sector and those who participate in community service provide numerous social services in the United States. Without non-profits and those willing to volunteer, many social services would cease to exist thus limiting the capacity for equity and social change in this country. You will learn about how current social issues face our communities and develop skills in community needs assessment and networking. You will also learn about the non-profit sector and how to create change through service initiatives including activism, direct service, or lifestyle change.
SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP THEME
Theme Class offered Tuesdays 2-3:50pm
In essence, social entrepreneurs are people using innovative business practices for social change. Success for a social entrepreneur is measured by the double bottom line of an innovative idea achieving positive social impact. This theme will give you exposure to both social entrepreneurship and socially responsible business practices and challenge you to utilize business skills to become a change agent.
